On this quay of the Rhine in the city of Leyden, Holland, Rembrandt van Rijn had his first studio from 1624. The Rijn (Rhine) river is called 'Galgewater' (Gallows Water) here because from 1659 to 1795, the bodies of those executed were hanging on gallows placed along the river here a little further on. That quay is the 'Kort Galgewater' (Short Gallows Water). Rembrandt was born opposite that studio (and opposite that windmill , just outside the frame on the left here, near the drawbridge).
